Efforts to expand the use of .IR started in early 2000 and a reorganization of .IR ccTLD took place in September 2001. At that time there were less than 700 .IR domains. The number increased to 3500 by December 2002 when new liberalized rules and a DRP were instituted. At the present time there are over 27 000 ASCII .IR domains and the number has been doubling every year since the liberalization.

A new development at IRNIC is the introduction of Persian IDNs. Persian is written in a variant of Arabic alphabet. The similarities and differences of keyboards and UNICODE strings for both the alphabet and the numerals of the two alphabets present great opportunities for abuse. The system developed at IRNIC uses the ‘bundle’ concept to combat such confusion. We will present a report on the progress of IDN registrations which has just passed from the ‘sunrise period’ into open registration.
